Frequently Asked Questions

What is coaching?

The International Coach Federation defines coaching as "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential."

Coaching is a process in which the coach and client work together to deepen the learning and forward the action of the client in ways that honor their unique values, perspectives, and way of being in the world.

My coaching practice is focused on helping successful professionals that want to make changes in their careers.

What are the differences between Coaching, Consulting, and Therapy?

Coaching is about maximizing potential. The client is assumed to be whole and unbroken, and the client wants even more from life. Coaching is about working with people in areas where they are functioning well in order to take it to the next level. Coaching is focused on the client's present and future.

Consulting is about solving problems. Clients see that they have a problem, often a business problem, and they pay the consultant to tell them how to solve the problem. The focus in consulting is the problem, not the person.

In therapy, there may be an area of life where the client is dysfunctional. A therapist may work to diagnose and treat the problem to help restore the client to a functional level in that area. Many therapists also now use coaching techniques. A therapist may work with a client to help them understand the reasons why they are where they are, focusing on the past to better understand the present.

Where can I learn more about coaching?

Two excellent resources are the International Coach Federation and Coaches Training Institute.

What are your coaching credentials?

I was trained by the Coaches Training Institute and completed a rigorous certification program including study, practice, and supervision by master coaches. After completing the program and passing oral and written exams, I was awarded the designation of Certified Professional Co-Active Coach. I am also a member of the International Coach Federation and have been credentialed through the ICF as an Associate Certified Coach.

At least as important as the credentials is our ability to connect with one another and work together to help you achieve the outcomes you want. The best way to know if I am the right coach for you is to schedule a complimentary initial session and give it a try.

Are our conversations confidential?

I am bound by the International Coach Federation (ICF) Code of Ethics to maintain the strictest level of confidentiality. With your permission, I may provide information to the ICF including your name, contact information, and the hours of coaching completed with you to be used solely for the purposes of credentialing. The only other instance in which I would release information regarding your identity as a coaching client or the content of our sessions is in the unlikely event that I am subpoenaed or otherwise legally bound to do so.
